Personal Advocacy Journey

The quote that I find inspirational reading the role that advocacy can be in the lives of young children and their family is “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.” By Williams Faulkner, I find this inspirational in regards to family members. that inspires an excites me most about my advocacy plan and being an advocate is that the families from Onward House will learn new knowledge and learn new information about childhood obesity. Knowing the struggle of childhood obesity I felt that it was a great reason to choose this topic because I think this is an important topic for families, staff, and the community to learn about. What excites me about being an advocate is that I know I can make a difference in family's lives and with my effort we can work together and try to love a healthier life. Sometimes families just need encouragement and information from someone else that cares about their well-being in order to make changes. The challenges and anxieties I feel related to engaging in the advocacy effort I have targeted is that I am aware that my topic might be strong for many families. I feel I need to be sensitive on how I persuaded my audience because I don't want them to feel I am attacking them or feel they are doing something wrong. I would work hard to convince the audience to give though and to consider my advocacy effort. I would provide evidence about my topic and I will also have all my research available and explain why my advocacy plan is important to live a healthier life. I believe that most effective part in helping me overcome any challenged emotions I may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing my advocacy action plan is by being able to communicate and have the ability to express myself clearly in both oral and writing form. These two skills are vital to convince my audience that my topic is important and it is important to learn about the effects of childhood obesity. I think I can encourage others in their advocacy effort, by reminding them to keep in mind that it is important to provide updated research and evidence about the topic. I also think it is important to ask questions about the topic to the audience because it is important for families to provide feedback. I think it is vital to know that the audience has and understanding about the topic. I can also encourage others in their advocacy to gather information and assemble it into a format that will inform the reader with evidence based materials established through numerous studies. Others can encourage me by providing constructive criticism because I think this would help me prepare myself for the real world.

  1. Hello Lupe
This is my third time attempting to publish a comment. Let me try again.
I think that as a proffesional we should treat everybody equally. We do not know their reason for obesity. But as educators we need to scaffold and implement healthy eating habits and exercising daily in our program. We could help the children choose fruits and fruit that they enjoy and serve them in our meetings or workshops. We could teach the parents healthy eating by having a nutritionist to provide more information.

  2. I feel that you are taking on a huge task in advocating for childhood obesity. I know a lot of people that are struggling right now with paying bills and keeping a roof over their heads. When they think about dinner, they are usually so busy and broke that they will do to the drive through and eat off the dollar menu. This is easy, fast, and cheap. How do you convince those that are doing this? I really think that this subject is important to talk about to our youth as well as families. Great subject!

  3. I think this is a great topic for you advocacy plan, we now see obesity in young children, and you mention it could be a hard topic for some families but it can help them understand that it could affect their child's learning such as not wanting to go to school because of being bully or feeling uncomfortable when having to sit in their desk. These factors can affect the child's learning and social development. Your advocacy plan can help parents understand that obesity can also affect their social and learning, not only health problems. I like how you will approach your audience and how you are gathering your facts.

  4. Mariubella,

This is an advocacy effort we both feel strongly about. I can tell you feel as strongly as I do about providing information and support to children and families so that they can be better informed about how childhood obesity can affect their lives.
I agree with your statement that this is a sensitive issue to address, but it is important to inform families of health risks associated with childhood obesity.
I have no doubt that you will be successful in delivering your presentation and in your continuing advocacy efforts as I can tell you feel strongly about this issue.

    Best wishes and continued success!

  6. Hello,
I loved reading your advocacy plan because starting with your quote I could tell you put a lot of time and effort into constructing your plan. Not only that but your choice of what to target-Child Obesity- is a topic that is relevant because even though this is a delicate issue it is seen in many centers regarding children's health.

  7. I think that childhood obesity is a major problem in the United States. In the beginning of my advocacy efforts, I too was thinking of this subject. It was so broad of a topic, I was not sure where to start or who to talk with. I commend your efforts to enforcing change for young children. Good luck and I look forward to hearing your progress!

  8. I agree that families do need guidance and encouragement to see that others have their back and are willing to help them. Families do need education so they can continue to raise their children well having people like you to advocate for a cause like child-hood obesity and healthy living is a great thing. I am also advocating for healthier families and lifestyles. The passion and commitment we have will definitely make a difference when we approach families about the issues of health, obesity, and poor nutrition. Continue to work hard your families and others you target in your audiences will listen good luck.
